The Type 89 tank, the first official tank in Japan, was equipped with a gasoline engine at the beginning of its development, but assuming operation on the continent where it is difficult to secure water, cooling water is unnecessary and fuel efficiency is improved. The engine was later replaced with an air cooled diesel engine that can reduce the risk of vehicle body flames due to fuel leaks.
